# \[DRC\] Proposal for dYdX Protocol Upgrade v8.1

This upgrade introduces builder fee support, order batching, cross-margin market launches, and improved liquidity tiers.

# Introduction:

Hello dYdX Community,

We’re bringing to your attention the dYdX Protocol release `v8.1`, aimed at better incentivising external builders, reducing friction and improving user experience, reducing market launch barriers.

**Note** : the introduction of `v8.1` is subject to software upgrade via a governance proposal.

# Specification:

Detailed information on the `v8.1` features can be found in the [release notes](https://github.com/dydxprotocol/v4-chain/releases/tag/protocol%2Fv8.1.0).  
Key improvements include:

- **Builder Codes** which enable external parties to earn fees for submitting and routing orders.
- **Clob Transaction Batching** which allows multiple order actions in a single transaction.
- **Cross Instant Market Listings** which support cross-margin trading from market launch.
- **IML\_5x** - a new liquidity tier for Instant Market Listings ([discussion](https://dydx.forum/t/new-liquidity-tier-for-instant-market-listings/3524))

# Next Steps:

Feedback is welcome on this DRC. The dYdX Operations subDAO suggests the following timeline for proceeding with the vote proposal:

- Proposal Submission: Jun 27 2025
- Expected Vote Outcome: July 1 2025
- Upgrade Date: July 2 2025
- Suggested Block Height: [48980000](https://www.mintscan.io/dydx/block/48980000)

**Note** : we advise that the potential proposer revise the suggested block height at the time of proposing and pick an upgrade height close to 15:00 UTC on July 2 - especially in case the ETA of [48980000](https://www.mintscan.io/dydx/block/48980000) has shifted dramatically.

**`Also, please note that the protocol software has dropped patch number from upgrade name, therefore mandating using “v8.1” in the proposal JSON.`**
